Chris Davies, who was recalled from Parliament last week after submitting false expenses claims, has been re-selected by the Conservative Party to fight the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.
Only 5,303 signatures (10% of the electorate in the seat which is eligible to vote) were needed in the six week recall petition period to unseat the MP and this was doubled. Davies was the MP for Brecon and Radnorshire since the 2015 General Election and never held a Ministerial or Cabinet position. In the 2017 snap General Election, he was returned to the House of Commons with an increased majority.
The Government Chief Whip, The Rt. Hon. Julian Smith MP, was meant to move a Writ today in Parliament which would set the date for the by-election – however it is understood this did not happen. A date has therefore not been set, but it is likely to occur in late July.
